Homeowners Flood Insurance

Flooding can happen almost anywhere, including much of Massachusetts. In fact, 20% of flood damage claims come from moderate-to-low risk areas. Flood damage is NOT covered by most homeowners and property insurance. Instead, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is run by the federal government, which determines flood zone risk throughout the country. These risk zones determine rates and flood insurance eligibility.

As long as your community participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, you are eligible to purchase flood insurance for your home, business or other property. Contents-only coverage is also available for renters or condo residents. Flood insurance can be surprisingly affordable, starting at just $129 per year for coverage of a building and contents. Note that there is a 30 day waiting period for flood insurance to go into effect, however, so plan ahead.

You may also need additional coverage for other types of water damage, as the NFIP will not cover a drain or sewer backup, for example. Speak with a Mackintire Insurance agent to find the flood insurance policy that’s right for you.
