Hurricane and Disaster Insurance

Hurricanes, tornadoes, windstorms and other disasters can strike Massachusetts throughout the year. Comprehensive hurricane or disaster insurance often requires a varied approach to ensure adequate coverage.

Begin by checking your existing policy to see what damage it covers from these disasters, since most homeowners insurance will cover some wind damage.  Nevertheless, many homeowners policies have higher deductibles for wind damage, in which the deductible is a percentage of property value rather than just a fixed amount. Also, many insurance companies have become reluctant to cover damage from these disasters, so it is important to check the details of your homeowners policy. Additional hurricane insurance coverage may be needed, especially if you live in a coastal zone or other area prone to hurricane damage.

Hurricane insurance often covers damage from wind only. Flood damage protection requires a separate flood insurance policy, offered by the federal government’s National Flood Insurance Program, even when the flooding is caused by a hurricane. Additional disaster insurance coverage may be needed if temporary housing is required in an emergency.
